On Wednesday, April 18, 2007, the Archives at Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon, experienced a ‘water event’ aka ‘the flood’. About 10:00 am I heard some unexpected noises from one of our storage areas, unlocked the door, and was hit by a wave of humid air. I heard a large gushing of water and then realized there was about an inch of water on the floor. I quickly called for help and two technicians from IT whose offices are next door came and helped to spread plastic sheeting over the effected shelves.
The Archives is located in the basement of the Center building, directly beneath the cafeteria. Facilities Management had been dealing with overflowing drains that morning, not realizing it was also impacting the Archives. It appears that somehow a t-shirt got into a drainage pipe (maybe it was flushed from a toilet) and that caused the water to back up and flood part of the cafeteria and then drain into the Archives.

Robert Henderson and his camera were rarely parted, as evidenced by the massive collection of photographic slides and images he left behind when he died last year.
“Every time I saw him, he had a camera in his hand,” said longtime friend and co-worker Arnold Appleby, emeritus professor in the department of crop and soil science at Oregon State University.
Henderson was a former administrator with the OSU Agricultural Experiment Station, and much of his photographic work features OSU-related activities, programs and people. His particular passions included agriculture, the OSU Marching Band, and the Triad Club, a faculty club on campus, but his collection includes images from around Corvallis, the university and the state.

Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions help small and mid-sized institutions, such as libraries, museums, historical societies, archival repositories, town and county records offices, and colleges, improve their ability to preserve and care for their humanities collections. Awards of up to $5000 support preservation related collection assessments, consultations, and workshops, and institutional and collaborative disaster and emergency planning. Grants cover consultant fees, workshop registration fees, related travel and per diem expenses, and the costs of purchasing and shipping preservation supplies and equipment.
All applications to the NEH must be submitted through www.grants.gov. See the application guidelines for details.
The 2007 guidelines for Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions are available at http://www.neh.gov/grants/guidelines/pag.html. You will also find sample project descriptions, sample narratives, and a list of frequently asked questions. The deadline for applications is May 15, 2007.
Small and mid-sized institutions that have never received an NEH grant are especially encouraged to apply.

Oregon Archaeology Celebration will be October 1 through 31, 2007. We are just starting the planning process for this year. Our theme is “Climate Change – Profiling Climate Change through Archaeology.” However, events do not have to “fit” that theme. Any and all events that help connect Oregonians to how people lived in the past, used land and resources in the past, created beauty, believed and took care of the land, resources and people in the past, any activity that helps modern day people appreciate the knowledge, skills and histories of peoples and cultures, is an “event” OAC would like to publicize and recognize.
Events can be static, unstaffed, such as a display, or interactive, such as a lecture or demonstration. They can require physical activity like a tour or mock dig or they can be stationary like a video presentation. Target participants can be children, adults, families, students or mixed-age audiences. Past events have ranged from elaborate “living history” fairs to simple, heritage themed displays in a library.
The heart of Oregon Archaeology Celebration is the events. While OAC will run the month of October, activities and events that start in September or continue into November also can be included. Please consider what you might want to do, what might be going on at your facility or with your programs next October and then consider list these items in the OAC Calendar of Events. The Calendar of Events gets distributed to thousands of individuals through schools, visitor centers, libraries, and tourism offices. It also is hosted on a website advertised by the Oregon Archaeology Celebration poster.

<<from the NWA Advocacy Committee>>
Dear NWA Oregon Members:
The NWA Advocacy Committee encourages interested members to contact their legislators on behalf of OHS in support of the Governor’s budget. There is new information on the OHS website about ways to express support, including the schedule of hearings the Ways and Means Committee will hold around the state. Your attendance and expressions of support at one or more of the hearings conducted in the following cities would be very helpful:
Eugene – April 4
Portland – April 5
Corvallis – April 10
Oregon City – April 11
Bend – April 12
Medford – April 13
Coos Bay – April 14
Please visit http://www.ohs.org/news/champ.cfm for more details.
Thank you,
